BACKYARD WILDLIFE HABITATS:

The Backyard Wildlife Habitat program was started by the National Wildlife Federation in 1973, and
is administered in partnership with the South Carolina Wildlife Federation.
The objective of this program is to educate about the benefits, for both people and wildlife,
of creating natural landscapes.

While restoring wildlife habitat in your own community, you will be doing your part to restore the ecology of the land on which you live. You will begin to see how you can have daily wildlife experiences by creating sustainable, wildlife friendly landscapes.

Once you create your habitat, submit an application to become certified by the National Wildlife Federation and join the thousands of other South Carolinians who are gardening for wildlife!
  • To become certified, you need to provide food, water, cover, and places to raise young for wildlife.
  • The easiest way to provide food is with birdfeeders, but you can also plant perennials, shrubs, and trees that have berries, seeds, or nectar.
  • Water can be supplied with bird baths, or a variety of other features including fountains, ponds, or bog gardens.
  • Evergreen plants and piles of logs, sticks, brush or rocks provide great sources of cover for wildlife to hide from predators, or stay out of the weather.
  • Many of your shrubs and trees provide great nesting places, but you can also supplement these with man-made nesting boxes or bird houses.
